Class History

The NCHS Class of 1977

A Brief History

The NCHS Class of 1977 started first grade in 1965 at six elementary schools - South Newton, Central, Newton Elementary, Thornton, Conover and Concordia.  The class graduated from sixth grade in 1971.  Shuford Elementary replaced Conover Elementary in 1970.

The Newton-Conover City Schools desegregated in 1968.  Our class was the fourth group to attend East Newton School (formerly Central) for seventh grade.  There were approximately 300 seventh graders on the campus.

From 1972 to 1974, we attended Newton-Conover Junior High School (the original NCHS) for eighth and ninth grade.

In 1974, we entered the present-day campus of Newton-Conover High School at 338 West 15th Street in Newton.  We graduated 187 strong on June 7, 1977.

Class reunions have been held every five years since leaving NCHS.  Planners have tried to invite all persons who have been in school with us between the years of 1965 to 1977.

     Class reunions were held in 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007, 2012, 2017 and 2022.

Ellen Workman is organizing the 2027 Newton-Conover High School Class of 1977 Reunion.  It will mark 50 years since the class left NCHS.  The 50-year celebration will be held in 2027 !!!
